The Most Valuable Player or MVP is the NBA’s most-coveted individual award, given to the best-performing player of the season. Here are the three players who stood out.
Other award considerations: Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks), Jayson Tatum (Celtics), Domantas Sabonis (Kings), Anthony Edwards (Timberwolves), Jalen Brunson (Knicks)
Nikola Jokić (C), Denver Nuggets
2023-24: 26.4 PPG, 12.4 RPG, 9.0 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.9 BPG
The 2x MVP Nikola Jokic is one of the favorites to win this season’s MVP award. If that happens, he’ll join the elite group of players of Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Moses Malone as the only players ever to win the award three times.
Jokic averaged 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, and nine assists per game for the second-seeded Denver Nuggets. His season average is almost comparable to his two previous MVP seasons.
Luka Dončić (PG/SG), Dallas Mavericks
2023-24: 33.9 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 9.8 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.5 BPG
Luka Dončić is one of the best players in the NBA since his rookie year, enough for him to win four All-NBA first teams in his first five years, and also a favorite this year.
He managed to continuously improve his game year over year, and close to recording a triple-double season average.
He finished the season with 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 9.8 assists, and has shown improvement on the defensive end.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (PG/SG), Oklahoma City Thunder
2023-24: 30.1 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 6.2 APG, 2.0 SPG, 0.9 BPG
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a stellar season following his last year’s emergence as an All-Star and All-NBA player.
He led the young and supposedly-rebuilding OKC Thunder to the top of the Western Conference with 30 points, 5.5 rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
